What is 3D Areola Repigmentation?
Areola Repigmentation, sometimes called 3D nipple tattooing, 3D areola tattooing, areola tattooing, or nipple tattoo is a non-surgical procedure where the illusion of a 3-dimensional areola and nipple are created through a specialized tattoo. This quick and nearly painless procedure uses a variety of advanced techniques to create a natural looking final result.
For many breast cancer and trauma survivors areola tattooing is the final step in their reconstruction journey. It is a way for many people to recover physically and emotionally from their mastectomy and breast reconstruction scars.
Our procedure is permanent. We use traditional tattoo pigments and traditional machines in our application process. This means you don’t experience the normal fading you see with tattooing techniques used by the surgeon’s office. Your procedure will be performed by an experienced tattoo artist- not by a support staff member who may have very little training time applying the tattoo.
We will guide you through the entire process from placement and size, to pigment color selection and aftercare. Every reconstruction procedure is a unique process. You are unique and we will use a trained eye to interpret what will be necessary to accomplish the best result. Variables such as scar patterns, skin thickness, scar tissue, placement, and prior medical history come into play.
The benefits of 3D nipple tattooing are extensive. We are able to create a three dimensional picture which gives the illusion of projection without the need for nipple reconstruction. We mix a color that is complementary to your skin tone and match the areola size to the size of your breast; this provides the most natural color tone and realistic result.
The types of 3D nipple tattooing we offer are unilateral and bilateral procedures. We can accomplish great results with or without nipple reconstruction. We are able to work over nipple tattooing performed by the surgeon’s office.
What should I expect during my appointment?
In just under 3 hours we’ll complete:
A Full consultation prior to the start of your procedure the areola color and size are determined with the help of your artist. In cases where a single nipple is to be created to match an existing breast the artist can mix numerous colors and shades to create a pigment match.
For bilateral reconstructions a pre-mastectomy photograph can be used or the patient can choose a new areola color.
Custom mapping and pre-drawing are used to aid in selecting the perfect areola shape and color.
High-Quality Pigments after drawing an outline of the areola, the artist uses a specialized tattoo instrument to transfer pigment into the skin.
Advanced Techniques while it might seem like getting a regular tattoo, areola tattooing requires advanced micropigmentation techniques like shadowing, blending, feathering, and highlighting in order to recreate a natural nipple.
How long does it last?
Like any other tattoo, some fading of pigment is possible. However, areola tattoos can often last a lifetime as the tattoo is less exposed to the sun.
